Mikado Collection – Chair

Mikado is a chair designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby for Vitra in 2024, reflecting a design approach that combines formal simplicity, comfort and attention to detail. Its enveloping silhouette is defined by a curved, generously upholstered backrest that complements the seat with a discreet yet distinctive presence. Mikado’s defining feature is its movement: an integrated mechanism beneath the seat allows the backrest to recline slightly, following the body’s natural movements and providing dynamic comfort. The upholstery covering the seat and backrest creates a soft, inviting feel, while the carefully balanced proportions make the chair suitable for both residential and professional settings, from dining areas to workspaces and meeting areas. A focus on longevity is reflected in its modular construction, designed to allow the covers and individual components to be replaced, as well as in the use of recycled materials. With Mikado, Barber and Osgerby reinterpret the contemporary chair as a piece of furniture that combines ergonomic research with aesthetic quality, making comfort an integral part of the design.
