The Haller low sideboard by USM, designed by Fritz Haller and Paul Schärer, interprets contemporary design through essential geometry and refined engineering. Originating in the 1960s from a project that brought architecture and engineering together, the USM Haller collection transforms modularity into an aesthetic principle, creating a furniture system that would become an icon of modern design. The chrome-plated steel structure, defined by its unmistakable spherical connector, combines with powder-coated steel panels to create a composition of clean lines and compact surfaces. In the low sideboard, horizontal proportions enhance the purity of the design and give the piece a discreet yet distinctive presence, allowing it to integrate naturally into both residential and professional interiors. Every detail reflects USM’s design philosophy, founded on technical precision, material durability and compositional freedom. Added to the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2001, Haller continues to embody a vision of furniture in which functionality and formal rigour transcend passing trends while retaining their contemporary relevance. In the Haller E version, technology is discreetly integrated into the original design through an LED lighting system that illuminates the interior compartments and can extend the light beneath the unit, introducing a new sensory dimension. Light thus becomes an integral part of the design, enhancing the precision of the structure and the purity of its forms. Renowned for its ability to transcend eras and settings, Haller continues to express a design philosophy founded on durability, functionality and innovation, while preserving its unmistakably contemporary identity.
