Reimagining a former silk mill: where industrial heritage meets contemporary design
Inside a fully redeveloped former silk mill, the project is set within a building that preserves traces of its original identity, reinterpreted in a contemporary key. The homeowners are a couple who chose this place as their personal and residential reference point, with a shared goal: to create a balance between everyday living and a sense of complete hospitality. The home becomes a place of return. A space capable of offering full comfort and consistently providing a feeling of pause and well-being. The project is rooted in a dialogue between history, memory, and heritage. The aim is not to transform, but to interpret. To enhance what already existed, starting from the generous ceiling heights, exposed beams, and large openings to the outside, while keeping the original structure as an integral part of the narrative. The result is a warm and welcoming atmosphere, where every choice helps build a balanced relationship between past and present. A place designed to be lived as a home, yet perceived as a space of pause.
Open space, materials and custom furnishings: the design of a warm and contemporary home
The apartment unfolds on a single level, where the open-plan living area becomes the heart of the project. The living space opens into a fluid environment designed to welcome and inhabit naturally, also through unconventional choices such as a lounge-height table, which defines a more informal and relaxed way of living the home. From the living room, the study is accessed through a glass pivot door, an element that acts both as a threshold and a visual connection. Its transparency enhances natural light and maintains perceptual continuity between the spaces. The night area is designed as a more intimate and secluded space, comprising a laundry room, a secondary bathroom, and a master bedroom with walk-in closet and en-suite bathroom. Here, the design becomes quieter, maintaining a material continuity that guides the transition between functions. The rhythm of the spaces is conceived as a sequence: openness, connection, enclosure. Material selection becomes a central element of the project. Wall and floor finishes interact to create a coherent base, upon which furnishings and details define the identity of each environment. Carefully selected finishes contribute to a warm and enveloping atmosphere, balancing materiality and natural light. The furnishings, including Minotti and Poliform, are integrated with custom-designed elements tailored to the specific needs of the client. Every choice is the result of a continuous dialogue between design and function, aesthetics and everyday use. The project translates into a home that delivers a constant sense of comfort and recognizability. A place that supports daily living without ever losing its sense of welcome and pause. What remains is a balance built between material, light, and identity. A project that does not merely define spaces, but interprets a way of living. A silent space where the home becomes an experience.
