EXPO 2015
Expo Milano 2015 is the Universal Exposition that Italy will host from 1 May to 31 October 2015 and will be the largest event ever held on food and nutrition. For six months, Milan will become a world showcase in which countries will display the best of their technologies to provide a concrete response to a vital need: being able to guarantee healthy, safe and sufficient food for all populations, while respecting the Planet and its balances. An exhibition area of 1.1 million square metres, more than 140 countries and international organisations involved, over 20 million visitors expected. These are the numbers of the most important international event to be held in our country. Expo Milano 2015 will be the platform for a sharing of ideas and solutions on the theme of food, to stimulate the creativity of countries and promote innovations for a sustainable future. But not only that. Expo Milano 2015 will offer everyone the chance to learn about and taste the world’s best dishes and discover the excellence of each country’s food and gastronomic traditions. For the duration of the event, the city of Milan and the Exhibition Site will be animated by artistic and musical events, conferences, shows, creative workshops and exhibitions.
FEEDING THE PLANET, ENERGY FOR LIFE
“Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” is the theme of the event, the logical thread running through all the events organised both inside and outside the Exhibition Site. Expo Milano 2015 will be an opportunity to reflect on and discuss the various attempts to find solutions to the contradictions of our world: while on the one hand there are still those who suffer from hunger (around 870 million undernourished people in 2010-2012), on the other hand, there are those who die from health disorders linked to an incorrect diet and too much food (around 2.8 million deaths from diseases linked to obesity or overweight). In addition, around 1.3 billion tonnes of food are wasted every year. This requires informed political choices, sustainable lifestyles and, also through the use of state-of-the-art technologies, a balance between resource availability and consumption. Reflection on the theme also transforms into a moment of sharing and celebration, thanks to meetings, events and shows to be experienced in the company of the mascot Foody and his cheerful companions. Every aspect, every moment, every participant in Expo Milano 2015 reflects and interprets the theme, Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.
